ASTRIDE THE DRAGON’S BACK The Great Wall of China, a ribbon of stone that stretches more than 1,500 miles from the Gobi to the Yellow Sea, is considered the greatest building project in history. National Geographic Adventure writer Matthew Power trekked across it for 10 days to see how the mythic rampart is fairing in the brave new world of modern China. What he found was one of the most underappreciated backpacking venues on Earth. |

Matthew Power is a contributing editor for National Geographic Adventure and Harper's Magazine. For much of the last three years he has been based in New Delhi, covering the tsunami in Thailand, the rebuilding of the Buddhas of Bamiyan in Afghanistan, and motorcycling through Kashmir to the highest road in the world. He travelled to China to trek an unreconstructed section of the Great Wall in June. |
