RIGHTEOUS and
THE SINNER’S GUIDE TO THE EVANGELICAL RIGHT

Monday, October 23 @ 7PM

Righteous: Dispatches from the Evangelical Youth Movement is journalist Lauren Sandler’s investigation of the new counter-culture in our country—the Christian youth movement. Conversions take place at rock shows and skate parks where the music is loud, the tattoos are ubiquitous and the belief system is fundamentalist. For these youth, the Bible is the only book worth reading, and salvation is the new drug. As Sandler illustrates in Righteous, the evangelical youth movement is rocketing from the mid-Western mega-churches and heading toward a high school near you.

The Sinner’s Guide to the Evangelical Right is an eye-opening yet satirical sociological look into the behind-the-scenes, less-than-holy dealings of some of the biggest churches in the world, run more like corporations than churches (complete with McDonald’s drive-thrus, Starbucks, and wireless access), and boasting strong political ties to the Republican party. Gone are the days when churches had steeples and stained glass windows – parishioners want their new megachurches sterile, mall-like, and looming, with as many comforting amenities as possible. Some might call it “church-lite,” but not the preachers who are making millions of dollars in the process.

Lauren Sandler spent three years at National Public Radio working for “Morning Edition” and “All Things Considered” and on features for “Weekend Edition” and the Cultural Desk. Sandler has written for The Atlantic Monthly, The New York Times, The Nation, The New Republic, The Village Voice, Elle, Salon, The Los Angeles Times, The Boston Globe, Ms., Marie Claire, and The Guardian. She is the Life Editor at Salon. Lauren Sandler lives in Brooklyn with her husband.

Robert Lanham, the author of The Hipster Handbook and Food Court Druids, Cherohonkees, and Other Creatures Unique to the Republic, has published countless articles in major publications. He lives in Brooklyn with his wife.
