The Vinson Valega Trio “suffuses a soulful
approach with an airy aesthetic.” Consisting of Anton Denner on saxophones
and flute, Gary Wang on bass, and Vinson Valega on drums, this working jazz
trio from New York City has played together for over four years now, and the
music they create reflects the loose and adventurous approach to standards
and originals only achieved through the strong trust between these
musicians. In fact, they might perform an entire set of music with no breaks
between songs, where the direction of the music at that moment dictates
which song comes next. This music has been documented on a new CD,
Consilience - a recording of both original music and arrangements of jazz
standards.
From
an AllAboutJazz.com review of their new CD:
"From the onset, one of the first things
to grab the listener’s attention is the wall of sound the trio produces.
Valega’s 'd-ruminations' are colorful and deliberate as every part of his
kit is skillfully used. Gary Wang’s bass is robust and precise with
excellent solo spotlights. Saxophonist Anton Denner plays with feeling,
maturity, and freedom on alto and soprano saxophones, as well as flute.
Their tightness as a unit is clearly evident but what is also clear is their
ability to keep the music relative and alive."
The Vinson Valega Trio has been performing
in support of Consilience throughout the New York area, and recently just
came back from playing at the Zanzibar Blue Jazz Club in Philadelphia, Blues
Alley in Washington, DC, and the Cape May Jazz Festival. Much more can be
found out about them on the website of their label, Consilience Productions,
where the tagline is: dialogue BEYOND music.
