Artist Slideshow & Photographs

Photographer Nina Weinberg Doran has spent the last several years focusing on photographing in Jamaica, Guatemala and Morocco with upcoming plans for travel further in Latin America. In this series of photographs made in Guatemala, Nina turns her camera to the people of this nation whose daily lives straddle traditional ways and a steadily encroaching modern world. Her intimate portraits reveal the beauty and fragility of the people and culture that she photographs.

Artist's Statement and Biography:

I was raised in a New York City suburb in a family devoted to the arts, and earned a Bachelor of Science from the University of New Hampshire, but it wasn’t until age 46 that I discovered my passion for photography. I spent much of the last few years shooting in the Caribbean, Guatemala, Morocco and the streets of New York City. In January I will have a small installation of Guatemalan images at the Half-King in NYC. This past October year I was in a solo exhibition at AHM Gallery in Alexandria, Virginia and another at Eyebuzz Gallery February 2008 in Tarrytown , New York.

In 2005, my photographs were exhibited at group shows at Center for Fine Art Photography in Fort Collins, Colorado, and the Center for Photographic Art in Carmel, California. This February two of my images can be seen in BW Magazine in their special issue. In July 2006, a five-page spread of my work was published in Focus Magazine.

Photography for me is my window on the world - a second language - the way I communicate that unspoken place deep inside me. There is nothing else that brings me a greater peace or a greater sense of satisfaction then when I have gone out and come upon that face, that space, whatever it is, where my heart starts skipping a beat. I need to propel myself out of a moving car or walk down a road or path in the opposite direction of which I was heading because I am magnetized - stirred in such a way that there is nothing else I can do.
