Photographer’s Statement

With its origins in Victorian music halls burlesque emerged in the last century as a combustible blend of satire, performance art and adult entertainment.

Featuring striptease and broad comedy acts performers often create elaborate sets with lush, colorful costumes, mood-appropriate music and dramatic lighting. Burlesque is always satirical, presented with a deliciously saucy edge. Many shows also feature novelty acts including fire-breathers and contortionists to enhance the evening's shock factor.

Encompassing inimitable parody and enormous wit New York’s fantastic ladies of Burlesque have enthralled and often utterly enchanted me since I first encountered them in the East Village and Lower East Side.

These photos are taken from a series of images I was lucky enough to capture around this great city over the last six years.
