ATHLETES |

About The Exhibit Scott McDermott shoots athletes with an eye for the difficult. Whether it is a snowboarder sailing through the afternoon sky at an impossible angle, or the eyes of an enraptured spectator watching a boxing match from below, the human struggle is apparent. A single man wipes his face with his shirt after basketball practice and we feel his exhaustion. A football team heads for the field and we feel the anticipation. Shot mostly with a Holga camera McDermott’s images of strain and stress are counterpointed by the camera’s soft edges and tradition of black and white. Within the subject of sports McDermott images examine the sense of story and the struggle of the human capacity. About Scott McDermott Scott McDermott has lived all over the world. After graduating from the International School in Geneva in1993 he took a “year off” before attending college. That year he spent 95 days in the wilderness on a NOLS course in the Rocky Mountains, then traveled to Nepal, alone, for a trek around the Annapurna range. During these experiences he took “a lot of pictures”. His passion for photography was revealed. “The possibility of doing it for a living was too good to turn down.” In 1997 Scott moved back to New York City and has been a photographer ever since. Sports and the athletic challenge, not surprisingly, is Scott’s focus. His work has appeared in many sporting publications including Outdoor Life, Backpacker, Ski Magazine, Runner’s World and Sports Illustrated for Women.
