Cycle Of Violence

November 6, 2006 - January 7, 2007

Opening Talk Wednesday, November 8 at 8p.m.

Artist's Statement

During eight years of living in New York, I usually only go home to Israel at times of crises. What has changed? I can no longer wander among Palestinians. The idea of one day being able to see the Arab world intimately and close has turned into a distant dream. Due to the ever-present violence in Israel, I feel personally affected by the uncertainty of tomorrow, no matter where I am.

Israel finds itself in a clear battle for its very existence. For my generation of Israelis, the independence war is now. Israel has twice conducted unilateral withdrawals from South Lebanon and the Gaza strip. Only seven months ago, Ehoud Olmert, Israel’s new Prime Minster, was voted into office on an agenda of continuing to uproot settlers from the occupied territories and withdraw from the West Bank in order to create “final borders” for the country. But it is the places where Israel has withdrawn that have exploded in the country’s face. Gaza and then Lebanon have never been more fueled with hatred and arms to continue the war.

It is during these times that I try to stop and understand how I too have become part of this horrific cycle of violence. Even though I live far away, the uncertainty of the borders, the unpredictability and hatred have swept to wherever I go. Perhaps that is what has forced me to look deeper inside the eye of such conflicts.
